The judging panel was comprised of five members, including Mr Freeman Lau, Chairman of Board of Directors, HKDC; Dr Raymond Au, Associate Professor, Institute of Textile and Clothing, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Ms Janet Cheung, renowned Hong Kong fashion and uniform design consultant; Ms Lulu Cheung, a leading Hong Kong fashion designer; and Mr Tom Tong, Executive Director & General Manager, MegaBox Development Co Limited.
Mr Young Kowk Lun was the winner picked by the judges, with the three runners-up being Mr Ken Lo, Mr Penter Yip and Ms Angela Wan. Mr Young is studying fashion design at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He would like to become a menswear designer in the future. His concept was to combine the elements of "modern", "sporty" and "professional" which reflects MegaBox's dynamic image.
All entrants were either fashion design students, practitioners or those who aspire to enter the field. The winner of the competition will have the opportunity of gaining widespread exposure for his or her work, as the winning design is intended to be worn by hundreds of MegaBox shopping mall staff. MegaBox holds the right to reproduce or adapt the winning designs of this competition for future commercial usage. It may also invite the winner to join the team led by a professional consultant to develop uniform samples for production. The new look of the frontline staff is part of MegaBox's strategic plan to distinguish itself in the marketplace and to support original Hong Kong design.
HKDC Chairman Mr Freeman Lau noted: "I am deeply impressed by the creative qualities of our young fashion designers. They have good fashion sense and a strong understanding of the business applications of design, so they were able to come up with entries that meet the requirements of both fashion and function. On behalf of the Hong Kong Design Centre, I would like to thank the academics and industry representatives for their support of this meaningful event. I am particularly grateful to MegaBox for giving this valuable opportunity to our young fashion designers and helping them realize their dreams of practising their skills in the real world."
Mr Tom Tong of MegaBox added: "MegaBox, with its new-to-Hong-Kong tenant mix, is designed to be groundbreaking in many respects. At the core of our vision is a plan to introduce a fresh new experience for shoppers in Hong Kong. In addition to its bold architectural design, MegaBox's total look features an attractive, customer-friendly image for its staff. We are pleased that the contestants' work reflects our innovative and client-oriented aspirations."
The competition drew a total of close to 40 entries. Contestants provided creative concepts in six categories of uniform: (1) customer service officers (2) cleaners (3) security staff (4) traffic controllers (5) technical staff and (6) tenant officers. As the competition was designed both as a challenge and a learning process for young designers, HKDC organized two briefing workshops to introduce the new retail and entertainment experience of MegaBox, as well as the latest trends and technologies in fashion and textile design.
There were two rounds of judging, from which ten short-listed designs were selected for today's final judging and catwalk parade. Each finalist received a subsidy for completing three uniforms in the design collection. The final winner will receive a cash award of HK$20,000, with three runners-up receiving HK$5,000 each.
