HKDC has invited renowned design celebrities and academics as the judges of the competition. They include Mr Freeman Lau, Chairman of Board of Directors, HKDC; Dr Raymond Au, Associate Professor, Institute of Textile and Clothing, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Ms Janet Cheung, renowned Hong Kong fashion and uniform design consultant; Ms Lulu Cheung, a leading Hong Kong fashion designer; and Mr Tom Tong, Executive Director & General Manager, MegaBox Development Co Limited.
By participating in the competition, Hong Kong fashion design students and practitioners will have the opportunity of gaining widespread exposure for their work, as the winning design is intended to be worn by hundreds of MegaBox shopping mall staff. The new look of the frontline staff is part of MegaBox's strategic plan to distinguish itself in the marketplace and to support original Hong Kong design.
HKDC Chairman Mr Freeman Lau said: "We have good fashion talents in Hong Kong, but we need support from the business sector to enable them to realize their creativity. Hong Kong, as a dynamic business hub, always welcomes innovation. I believe there are many opportunities for the business sector to leverage on our local design talents to sharpen their competitive edge. I am delighted to have the support of MegaBox in this proprietary competition, which will allow fashion design practitioners and students to have their work translated into uniforms worn by hundreds of shopping mall staff, whose image is a critical part of MegaBox's brand positioning."
Mr Tom Tong of MegaBox remarked: "I would like to thank HKDC for the opportunity to support such a meaningful and creative fashion-business joint effort. As shopping malls today must provide a new experience for customers, a total look - including unique architecture, leading-edge audio-visual elements and, most importantly, a team that looks stylish and distinctive - is essential for completing the image of a shopping mall. We look forward to seeing the brilliant design concepts of our local pool of fashion talents."
To qualify for the competition, all contestants should provide creative concepts in six categories of uniform: (1) customer service officers (2) cleaners (3) security staff (4) traffic controllers (5) technical staff and (6) tenant officers. Two briefing workshops will be organized by HKDC to introduce the architecture and the new retail and entertainment experience of MegaBox, as well as the latest trends and technologies in fashion and textile design.
All entry materials must be mailed or delivered in person to the Hong Kong Design Centre by 6:00 pm Monday, 31 July 2006. There will be two rounds of judging. Ten short-listed designs will be selected from the professional and student categories for final judging during early September 2006. Each finalist will receive a subsidy for completing one piece of the design collection. The final winner will receive a cash award of HK$20,000, with three runners-up receiving HK$5,000 each.
